Fell walking can be dangerous
All forms of outdoor recreation have a higher level of risk than most ordinary activities and therefore can be potentially dangerous; this includes fell walking. Weather can often be adverse or unpredictable, changing very quickly. Navigation may be difficult and your ability to navigate may be compromised in mist. There are many risks, both natural and man-made, that could lead to injury or death while fell walking.
It is the responsibility of the users of this website to learn the necessary skills for safe fell walking. All participants must assume responsibility for their own actions and safety, exercise sound judgment, be prepared for all conditions, and seek advice when needed.
Safety
For your own safety, please:
- Read all the safety information on the Adventure Smart website.
- Carefully plan your walks, ensuring that you are fit enough to complete the walk safely. If you are unsure about your fitness, begin with short walks to build your confidence.
- Calculate how long the walk will take and ensure that you have enough daylight hours to easily complete it.
- Check the mountain weather forecast before setting off so that you are clear about the conditions you will experience whilst on the walk.
- Always dress appropriately for the prevailing conditions, wear suitable footwear, and carry additional clothing in case the weather should change.
- Carry enough water, especially in hot weather, to avoid dehydration.
- Carry the tools for navigation and know how to use them. Typically, you should have a mapping app on your smartphone and a paper map and compass as a backup.
- Use a comfortable backpack containing a headtorch, a small first aid kit, a whistle, and enough food for your walk, plus the items listed above.
In case of emergency when on the fells, call 999 or 112, then ask for “Police” then “Mountain Rescue”.
