The Far Eastern Fells

High Street from Kidsty Pike

The Far Eastern Fells area is described in Book Two of Alfred Wainwright’s Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells. It includes the area to the east of Ullswater, the Kirkstone Pass, and Ambleside, and is bounded to the east by the Haweswater Reservoir. It is the largest of Wainwright’s areas with 36 Wainwrights, including popular fells such as High Street, and stretches 18km from Arthur’s Pike in the north to Sour Howes in the south. There are several classic walks within this area including, the Kentmere Horseshoe, and the Boredale Round.

Far Eastern Fells location and routes

This map shows the distribution of the 36 Far Eastern Fells. It also shows all the ridge routes described in Wainwright’s guide and any other viable routes between adjacent fells. This is the largest of Wainwright’s areas and has a complex arrangement of fells. However, the main spine of the group runs along High Street from Arthur’s Pike in the north to Sour Howes in the south. Generally, the fells to the west are popular with walkers, especially the more accessible fells such as Place Fell and Angletarn Pikes, while the fells to the east are best for those who prefer solitude.
